As much as the team at Dog Tales Rescue want to take in every single animal in need of a home, the reality is that they simply can’t. The sanctuary receives dozens of surrender requests a day, and the team needs to carefully sift through them all to determine which cases they can conceivably take on.

It’s not only a matter of capacity, Rob says his primary concerns when looking at applications are behavioural. He needs to make sure the newcomers won’t put his staff or the other dogs in danger, which is what makes the in-person assessment so important: The team needs to experience these animals interacting with trainers and other dogs first-hand.

Husky Bella is in a pretty tough situation and looking for a second chance at Dog Tales. She was surrendered to the Société protectrice des animaux de Québec (SPA) by her owners and has behavioural issues, which her current shelter doesn’t have the resources to address. The staff who have worked with Bella say she has great potential, but with a history of biting (both people and other dogs), this pooch is having trouble finding a home, and that’s landed her on the shelter’s euthanasia list. Dog Tales is literally her last chance at survival.

Melanie, a coordinator at the SPA de Québec, is a big advocate for Bella and was happy to drive the more than nine hours from Quebec City to King City, Ont., in the hopes that Rob and Danielle would accept Bella into their doggy family.

The appointment seems to be going well until an unexpected approach by a trainer prompts Bella to snap at his hand. Not a good sign. But they’re not done yet. Rob still wants to see how Bella behaves around other dogs.

Will Rob decide to welcome Bella to the rescue?
