A few months ago it was announced that Julia Child’s cottage, La Pitchoune, in Provence France, the one her and her husband visited every year, was up for sale.
Well, someone bought it!
Now, if you’re a big fan of The French Chef and are bummed you didn’t get to put your very own €800,000 bid on it, don’t worry! The couple that bought it is opening it up as a new destination for Child fans by turning it into a culinary retreat center.
Makenna Johnston and her wife Yvonne Johnston purchased the cottage because they wanted to continue Child’s legacy, and give beginner cooks the same courage to try the kind of ambitious recipes that Child was able to give them, they told The Smithsonian. “Our goal is to really take out some of the anxiety that comes with big messes, especially for new-ish cooks,” said Makenna.

The center will host retreaters in the guest house, hold cooking sessions, and even offer yoga classes. They want the cottage to be “a home base for a center on culinary exploration, peace and community,” wrote Makenna.
Makenna will be taking intensive one-month classes at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, and her wife Yvonne is finishing attending the International Culinary Center in New York. They’ve gotta keep their skills – and their knives – sharp so they can do Julia proud!
So next time you’re in France make sure to stop by, take in a yoga class, and get a first hand look at a kitchen that was used by the very own Julia Child.
