You don’t have to be a burger aficionado to appreciate a good patty, especially when you’re on a road trip. After all, what makes a long ride in the car more fun than knowing you get to stop at your favourite roadside grill for a good old fashioned burger? Snacks are the key to any successful road trip, after all.

That’s why we’ve rounded up 10 of the best roadside burger joints Canada has to offer. We even got some of our favourite TV personalities (hi, Mary Berg!) to share their faves. From peanut butter burgers to specially ground patties and everything in between, here’s the spots you absolutely have to hit up while on the road.

Webers, Orillia, Ont.

If it’s a charcoal barbecued hamburger you seek, this establishment has been grilling up theirs to perfection since 1963. Their joint has become so popular that they even built a bridge over the highway so that people coming from the other way would stop dangerously darting across the busy road.

Champ Burger, Shelbourne, Ont.

If you’re heading up to Wasaga or Collingwood, this burger joint is a must. And while their expansive menu includes things like chicken burgers and steak sandwiches, the burger remains where it’s truly at. Come on, just look at it.

Peter’s Drive-In, Calgary

This joint boasts flame-broiled burgers that are never frozen, which might attest to the popularity of the place. However, no burger here would be complete without one of Peter’s signature old-fashioned milkshakes.

Starlite Diner Car, Bowden, Alta.

Come for the burger but stay for the retro ambiance at this actual diner car that’s straight out of the 1950s. Seriously, could this place BE any cuter?

Boom Burger, Charlottetown, PEI

Fresh burgers and PEI fries are the staples of this local joint that’s situated right off the main road that leads into Charlottetown. Of course, the fact that they top their burgers with award-winning, extra-old cheddar from Cows Creamery doesn’t hurt either.

Jonny’s Cookhouse and Ice Cream Shop, Berwick, N.S.

Jonny’s cooks up a mean, filler-free burger that’s ground fresh from choice cuts of beef daily, and then wedges it in between a freshly baked bun for utter perfection. Pair yours with a poutine and some creamy, handcrafted soft-serve ice cream for a real indulgence.

The Jonny Burger. Oh. My. God. May have been a religious experience.

Darrell’s Restaurant, Halifax

This best-of Halifax winner for best burger and best milkshake also happens to be a favourite spot of Your Morning host Priya Sam.

“They do a peanut butter burger which I dream about because it combines two of my favourite things…peanut butter and burgers,” she says. “Their patties are also really flavourful and they manage to somehow get them crispy on the outside without drying them out on the inside, I like it better every time!”

Triple B’s Burger Shack, Madeira Park, B.C.

Gusto host Spencer Watts holds this meaty joint near and dear to his heart, referring to it as “a great local burger shack.” So what does he indulge in whenever he has a chance to stop by? “The Sunshine burger all the way.”

Chuck’s Burger Bar, Sidney, B.C.

Bring your appetite if you’re heading to this island establishment, which boasts a wide array of burgers with all the toppings. Pair yours with a pint, unless you happen to be this trip’s DD. In that case it’s extra fries for you, friend.

Grillicious Gourmet Food, Gravenhurst, Ont.

If you want to try something just a little bit different, Gusto host Mary Berg picks this joint hands-down as her favourite.

“Grillicious Gourmet Food Truck in Gravenhurst is a must-go when I’m up north at the cottage in the summer. Now, I don’t eat traditional burgers but they do make the most amazing smoked trout sandwich on a pretzel bun and their fries, deep fried pickle spears, and jalapeno poppers are out of this world,” she says. “This little spot is located on the lot of one of my favourite breweries so, whether I’m in for a pint and a round of crokinole on a hot summer day or just passing through town on the way to our cottage and stopping in to buy some beers for the weekend, I’m always sure to make a stop at Grillicious.”
